Sri Puteri's, Panmure

I discovered this cozy place by coincidence during a visit to a real estate agency in Panmure. I've only been to Panmure once for work purpose until I spotted this rare gem, which has made Panmure a place to visit every Sunday for a much needed dose of Malaysian food.

This place has been recommended by Metro magazine and its popularity has skyrocketed since. The restaurant is small and looks dingy but once you are seated by the iconic lady owner with the infamous megawatt smile and warm hospitality, Lily Gomez; it instantly becomes a weekly agenda, if not a ritual.Going there during the warmer periods of the year eases my homesickness, especially with a sip of teh halia ( ginger tea) brewed to perfection.

Sri Puteri's brings that nice multicultural blend being run by Malaysian Indians and Malaysian Chinese. Unlike other Malaysian restaurants that are solely operated by Malaysian Chinese, this place oozes a homeyness as if you are sitting in the kopitiam or mamak. The chefs are Penangites ( people who originated from Penang, Malaysia) who whips out some wicked Char Kuey Teows and their sambal belacan is seriously not for the faint hearted locals who are not accustomed to the Malaysians' love for everything spicy and pungent uumpph.

Last week we went for a lazy Sunday brunch and ordered char kuey teow, nasi lemak , mee yoke and washed it down with teh halia and bandung. S loves bandung but very quickly develop a fondness for this much loved unsung hero of a drink.
This little one sure knows what good food tastes like.....

The char kuey teow ( NZD 8.50) fares well...with a lot of wok hei and is comparable to my usual haunt from the char kuey teow uncle in Mercury Plaza .The most delectable nasi lemak (NZD 10.50) in Auckland but abit stingy with ikan bilis (anchovies) and peanuts.
Hmmm.....teh halia(NZD 2.50).
The mee yoke (NZD 9.50) is not bad but nothing close to SS2 Lim Mee Yoke's.

Sambal belacan with 'uummph'

With such gorgeous food and atmosphere,Sri Puteri's is definitely the place to wrap up a week and anticipate the one ahead....with another visit !

Sun World Restaurant, Newmarket

Last weekend S and I finally got around to bring two of our Irish friends to go Yum Cha in Newmarket. Whereas in Malaysia everyone refers Yum Cha as in having a drink in the mamak store or a cafe, but to the people from Hong Kong Yum Cha means eating dim sum.

The weather was horrible, rainy and cold but we really want to eat some dim sum. Mike, hasn't tried it before and was eager to try it out. So as soon as they hopped off the plane from a vacation in Fiji, we went to Sun World in Newmarket.

This is my second time in Sun World since the new management. We ordered quite an array of dishes , my favorite being the har kau ( prawn dumplings). Their har kau is really good and big compared to other places in Auckland.
Fried Hedgehogs....is actually Fried Man Tou with sweet taro filling. So cute and super yummy too!!They have the nicest Egg Tarts....very smooth and not too sweet. Their standard is comparable to the ones I tried in Hong Kong and my Hong Kong friends are glad to attest.
Stuffed eggplants with fish paste. Yummm....

Hopefully I will have a chance to take more photos amidst some growling stomaches in the next yum cha outing so that I can post more pics here.

Faye Wong - From the Beginning

This is a special boxed set collection of nine Faye Wong's albums from the very first one, titled 'Everything ' when she was known as Shirley 王靖雯 up till Di Dar. This is indeed a very rare special collection set that I have scoured all over the place for and finally found the last set in HMV Hong Kong for HKD 585 for this set. Since it was the last set and maybe not very sought after anymore, you can see that the box is rather worn out. No complaints there since the CDs play fine. This CD set evokes memories of the good old days of non stop Faye music playing in my room during high school years.....Ooops! my age revealed! hehe. As any Faye fan will tell you, one can never get bored of her music because they are really good, well produced and her voice is almost flawless. And if not for Faye Wong, I wouldn't have started listening to chinese songs and learnt reading chinese from karaoke singing sessions.
Unfortunately, this set only comprises her earlier cantonese albums but not her famous mandarin albums like ( Mesmerized) and 天空(Sky).

I know that this post is a bit out of the theme of this blog but I just want to share something so precious with others who like Faye's music. If you want to get this set, maybe you can try to contact HMV Hong Kong or try Yesasia.com.

I just saw the dvd version of Faye's first concert in HK Coliseum1994 available...will order that because when it first came out, it was vhs and there's no way to watch vhs these days since no one owns a vcr anymore.

It would be awesome if I could post this entry in chinese but I think I will spare myself from making an ass of my half bucket full karaoke learnt chinese.

Sri Mahkota Restaurant, Howick

This is actually my first posting of a Malaysian restaurant in Auckland. There are only a few of them in Auckland and the most famous being KK in Ellerslie. I was in KK about two weeks ago and was too busy eating until I forgot to take pictures...that's how I am usually. I forget everything as soon as I see food and also sometimes it could be quite testing to snap a few shots in a restaurant without achieving that weird stare from other patrons. But I need to start taking photos more often so that my blog will not only consist of pictures I take indoor.

Ok....enough of my crap....went to Sri Mahkota for lunch and always wanted to try it out since it opened this year. The first dish to catch my attention was the Fish Head Vermicelli from the table next to us. As with most eateries in Auckland, the serving size is huge and that doesn't allow you to try out that many dishes at one go if you come in a small group.

The fish head noodles was abit disappointing because the fish that they used were not fried thoroughly and the fish was too gelatinous and makes the soup very cloudy. Unlike in Malaysia, they usually give you small chunks of aromatic fried fish in your noodles. The soup was not how I usually like it to be.....almost tasteless and very fishy. Without kiamchai and tomatoes I wouldn't really call this a fish head bihun.
We also ordered karipap as entree and my selection for the day was Assam Laksa since there are hardly offered here in Malaysia restaurant. I was just curious how it'd taste....but I should have taken the first hint .I have a theory when I go get my Assam Laksa....if you don't smell it from meters away it means that the Assam Laksa is not worth any effort to eat. Once again, I have proven my theory right. Next time, if you don't smell it first, don't bother.

The karipap is obviously straight from the freezer the very moment I sank my teeth on it. Maybe I will still come back here for Char Koay Teow since it smells nice when I saw other people eating it. Otherwise, I'll stick to my Mercury Plaza uncle for my dosage of Malaysian food.
